This was made clear by a recent Bankrate report and are you even surprised? If you are trying to figure out how to make extra money online in addition to working a full-time job (and who isn’t?), it can be hard to know what side hustles work and what’s a total waste of time.
I’ve personally done the searching for you and found 77 ways to make extra money online in your spare time. In this article, I will share all the ways you can earn money online (and offline).
So, how much money do you want to make? Making a quick $100 sounds easy enough (I’ve covered how here) — how about making $3,000 or even $4,000? These ideas can help get you there! And you can use these ideas to make extra money from the comfort of your home, online, or on the side.
Easy Ways to Start Making Money Online for Beginners
Can you really live without a job? Probably not, but these are our favorite ways to make money online for beginners.
1. Get a delivery gig
With all of the on-demand apps out there today this one is an easy one. All you need to have is a car or bike, in most cases. Apps like DoorDash, Instacart, and Postmates are easy to sign up for and start making money. There are always people that are looking for a ride or looking to get something delivered. Another great part about doing delivery jobs is that you can pick your hours and it’s extremely flexible.
DoorDash provides more stable hourly pay but has lower earning potential. Instacart has higher earning potential but you must book your schedule in advance. Most gig workers sign up for both to maximize their earning potential.
2. Earn cash back on gas
Upside knows that shopping local can put you back in touch with your community and help you uncover hidden gems. But you still want to get the best deals, which is why Upside is so helpful. The app is a legitimate way to earn cash back on participating gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores. It is the absolute best cash back apps for gas we’ve reviewed.
2. Complete online surveys
Yes, you do get paid to give your opinion! Taking online surveys to make extra money is a no-brainer. You definitely won’t get rich or make hundreds of dollars per day with a survey alone, but you won’t waste much time, and you can make some money the easy way.
For example, Survey Junkie pays between $.50 and $1.25 per survey, and many of them take less than 5 minutes to complete. So if you took 10 surveys per day, every day for a month, you could make $375 per month. If you took more surveys a day — the possibilities are endless. Survey sites like Survey Junkie, InboxDollars, and Swagbucks are worth a look as they will pay you for a variety of online tasks beyond surveys.
3. Get a free stock
Ever feel like you aren’t investing enough money? You’re not alone. But I found a way that you can free stock through Robinhood’s promotional bonus that’s currently running.
This app is legit free to buy and sell stocks and they’ll give you a free stock up to $225 just for joining. But guess what? You don’t even need to deposit any money to get the free stock, just join through this link and you can sell it within a few days and transfer the cash to your account – a nice way to earn instant quick cash.
4. Let someone negotiate your bills
Even though it’s not technically a side hustle, it’ll help you free up some expenses so you can have extra spending money. There are several expenses that we pay for that we don’t need. Apps like Trim let you save money through automation and within a few days, I saved an extra $100. I linked my financial accounts and Trim went to work.
It will find ways to lower your bills and cancel subscriptions, negotiate my cable, internet, and cell phone bill and find subscriptions to cancel. It even helps to analyze your spending habits. It can easily find ways to save you money and remember it’s 100% free to activate. You’ll likely rack up $100 in savings this year by using it. For more details on how to stop getting ripped off, check out our complete Trim review.
5. Make money online with dividends
It’s been said that the average millionaire has seven streams of income. Dividend stocks are usually always in the mix. Dividend stocks are similar to regular shares of stock, but they pay you a small portion of the companies earnings monthly or quarterly. So it’s wise to build a portfolio of dividend-paying stocks!
If you wanted to learn more about investing I would check out my Unifimoney review. What I like about Unifimoney is that they make it really easy to invest in stocks, while still having plenty of features as you get more comfortable with investing. Plus, they’ll give you up to $5,000 in Bitcoin just for joining. The process is easy, just sign for a new Unifimoney account using this referral link to learn more.
6. Get free gift cards for shopping
Get free gift cards for grocery store items you would have bought anyway. You can do this by downloading apps like Fetch Rewards. Fetch Rewards is my favorite way to make money when I shop for groceries and right now they are offering a $3 sign-up bonus after scanning your first receipt. Every time I go grocery shopping, I scan my receipts within the app and then I get free gift cards. There’s no catch.
7. Collect bank bonuses
One option for you if you are looking to make some extra cash is to collect some of the best bank account bonuses. Many banks offer sign-up bonuses and other incentives to attract new customers.
By taking advantage of these offers, you can earn extra money without having to commit to a full-time job or invest a lot of time.
In this era of easy access to information and technology, it has become easier than ever to learn about these bank bonuses and how to maximize them. You can see some of my favorite banking offers currently live below:
- Open an account and set up qualifying direct deposit within 25 days.
- Open account and set up direct deposit within 90 days of coupon enrollment.
- Make direct deposits totaling $500 or more within 90 days of account opening.
8. Refinance your student loans
Sometimes you can make extra money just by finding new ways to save. A big one that many people fail to remember is that you can save around $300/month just by refinancing student loans. Student loan refinancing will save you money if you qualify for a lower interest rate and either keep the same term length or get a shorter one. A lower rate can give you lower monthly student loan payments, a shorter repayment period or both.

By spending a couple of minutes per day on this (either on your break at work or during TV commercial breaks) you can earn and earn an extra $100/month.
10. Get money back when prices drop
Save some money on your purchases without chasing it yourself. Just let the Capital One Shopping people do the work. This free app will scan your emails for any purchase receipts from dozens of online retailers. If a price drops after the fact, Capital One Shopping Price Protection can help you receive reimbursement when possible. You don’t even have to know about the price drop in order to get your refund. 11. Install certain apps on your phone
By using the internet as you do every day, Nielsen invites you to make a difference – and you can make money online too. You don’t even have to do anything other than registering your computer or phone. Nielsen will pay you $50 a year to keep their app on your favorite internet browsing device and they also give away $10,000 each month. So you can possibly make more than $50.
12. Sell your old textbooks
Do you have old textbooks from college lying around? You should consider trading them in on Amazon. In addition to textbooks, you can probably sell old books, DVDs, cell phones, or other electronics you may have lying around. You would be surprised how many Amazon gift cards you could get for your unwanted items.
If you don’t like the trade-in quote that you receive, you can also sell products on the Amazon platform and gain access to the millions of Amazon customers that shop the site each day. Amazon allows anyone with a Seller Central account to list and sell products – in fact, approximately half of all products selling on Amazon are from third-party sellers, not from Amazon itself. In 2018 alone, third-party sellers accounted for $42.75 billion (yes a B) in revenue. Want your piece of that pie?
13. Scan in-store items with your smartphone
Shopkick is the money-making app that rewards you with free gift cards for the shopping you already do. You can join the millions of Shopkickers who have earned over $63.8 million in free gift cards to Walmart, Target, Amazon, Starbucks and more. How many streaming services and other useless subscriptions are signed up for? I know I’m probably throwing away $100 or more on these monthly charges each month. That was until I learned about the free app, Rocket Money. Rocket Money is the easiest way to find subscriptions, manage bills, and even cancel recurring charges with a single click. It found ways to lower my bills and cancel subscriptions; negotiate my Verizon bill, found subscriptions to cancel, and analyzed my spending habits, and more.

Some of us couldn’t draw a stick figure to save our lives (guilty as charged!), but if you can wield a pen, paintbrush, or knitting needle like a weapon then chances are you could turn your hobbies into a real moneymaker. This is nothing new. Arts and crafts have always found a place at local markets. Only now do you have access to not just your local community, but the entire world!
This process couldn’t be easier. Just sign up to sites like Etsy, RedBubble, or DeviantArt, create your own online storefront, and start listing your creations. From here? Get the word out there via Twitter, Facebook, and other niche communities that might be interested in what you make, and start getting paid for the time you probably already put into a hobby that you love.
20. Automate your savings
Qapital is a mobile savings app that makes automatic or manual deposits based on your income. It makes saving money easy because it automates the process for you because nobody likes seeing huge chunks of money coming out of their bank account. But it goes a step further than some of the others by offering a social and family component, where you can save money as part of a group, as well as robust goal-setting features for when you have specific savings milestones in mind. I go over this feature in my Qapital Review and how it can help you automate your savings and do it with a social aspect which makes saving money fun.
Becoming a social media manager is a great gig because we all use social media, know how to post things, and all businesses need an online presence. To equalize on this, you can log on to Fiverr and get jobs for maintaining social media pages. You can also do simple things like create pins for people’s Pinterest Account or retweet people’s Tweets and earn if you have a large following.

Believe it or not, companies and people are willing to pay huge bucks for proofreading and editing reports, proposals, advertising copies and other such documents. In fact, certain freelance proofreading is known to pay $17 per hour. If you happen to have a background in human resources, you have an added leverage. You can also take up resume and cover-letter editing projects as there is a huge job-seekers’ market out there.

If you wanted to take a stab at affiliate marketing for your blog I would recommend the MaxBounty, FlexOffers, Aragon Premium, Impact, CJ, and Panther Network. A perfect way to add affiliate links to your blog or website that doesn’t look spammy and is one of the best ways to make money blogging.

They are, however, very easy once you know how to write a great one. Spend some time learning how to write a great resume. There are a ton of great resources online from very reputable sites. I went from having no clue how to write a resume to be awesome at it.
How do I know I was awesome at it? Every human resource or hiring manager that saw my resume commented on it. They asked how a college student with no experience could have such a great resume. Learning to write a resume is not difficult, it just takes a little bit of time to learn. Once you learn it then you can repeat the same process for each individual resume your write. Then you can start charging for your resume and cover letter writing services on Fiverr or friends and family.

We had an interview with a man who makes his money by investing in websites. Here’s a snippet from the interview when we asked him, how can you make money online investing in websites rather than building your own? Why not save the initial capital investment, and just build your own from scratch? And his responses enlightened us.
One word: Time. Our most valuable resource, which many of us seemingly don’t show it the respect it deserves. Skip the dull process of waiting months to earn your first dollar building up a website from scratch. Throw yourself in the deep end, lay down an initial investment, show your commitment to the journey, and watch the learning curve reduce exponentially.
